My daughters LOVE the show “America’s Got Talent”, and I love watching it with them because it’s something we CAN watch together.
We saw it last night, and this one kid blew me the hell away–a nine year old blues guitarist. He was really good. I mean, GOOD. He taught himself to play, too–never had a lesson. The best part, though, was how polite this kid was. He was charming and sincere and said “Thank you” several times. You wouldn’t think simple manners would be that big of a deal, but a lot of kids today don’t have nice manners.
I have always insisted my kids learn how to be gracious, and polite. Manners will get you a long way. I don’t care how stupid you are: if you have nice manners, you will stand out. I don’t know if the parents around here just don’t feel it is necessary, or if they don’t know better themselves, but their kids won’t even say “thank you” or “please”, let alone address a woman as “ma’am”.
My kids do, though, and I am proud of them. We get complimented all the time on their behavior, and it makes me feel like I am doing something right. Both girls tease me about it, and wonder why it’s a big deal, but you know what? It IS a big deal. You have to put your napkin in your lap, even if we aren’t at a fancy dinner or restaurant. Why? Because it is the classy thing to do, and someday when they are older I don’t want them to look like fools when they go out to a business dinner and not know which fork to use, or know how to respond politely when being introduced.
Most of the little bitches on our block are so rude and disrespectful that their shitty behavior makes OUR girls look even better. ![]()
My brother got a DUI when he was 17. He had to go to court, and was one of the last people on the docket. By the time it was his turn to go before the judge, the judge was in a bad mood. He had been talked down to, cussed at, and bitched at all fucking day for being “unfair”. Then comes Dave, hat in hand, begging for forgiveness and apologizing profusely and respectfully. Guess what? He got off without so much as a slap on the wrist. He stood out. He was every bit as guilty as the other assholes, but he stood out and made the judge WANT to be lenient because he didn’t act like a fucking savage.
I hope the nine year old guitarist wins, if for no other reason than because he was NICE.
